That is an excellent question, & shows an unusual clarity of thought!

The answer is: people like me.

The world is NOT coming to an end. And if it was, having a big suitcase full of ''safe'' cash would not do u any good, would it?

So inevitably, things will settle back down & the market will grow again, probably at it is historical average rate of 8-10% a year, maybe a little faster at first to make up for the recent irrational silliness.

So people like me buy on every ''really bad day!'' & scoop up stocks at what amount to bargain prices.That is one way to get horribly wealthy!

The reason for the stocks going down is, that nobody is buying them. During a healthy economy, stocks r bought & sold every millisecond & buying & selling balances each other.
The eternal hope is, that some investors will return to the table & start buying again.
From 1929 to 1952, that was not the case. Same in the 70 is & 80 is for 16 years.
Its interesting, that the Dow goes up only during short stretches & sucks most of the time, but people believe otherwise.
